ParkWord
March 2010
Animal attractions can be big business, but the
unfortunate incident last month at SeaWorld in Orlando has galvanised
opinion from those who would prefer not to see wild creatures –
particularly those as large as a whale – kept in captivity.
Today there are some excellent attractions that blur the boundaries
between animal parks and amusement parks. Many zoos have also
made considerable improvements in recent years.
In this issue of Park World, we have news from a pony park in the
Netherlands, a bug-based attraction in the UK and a dinosaur exhibit on
London’s Oxford Street – proof that animals of all shapes, sizes and
ages continue to fascinate the general public.
While I don’t question the welfare of animals in the majority of cases
(especially animatronic dinosaurs), perhaps we shouldn’t be too
surprised when they attack. I am reminded of a line by the American
comedian Chris Rock, commenting on an incident with a tiger in a
performance by Siegfried & Roy: “Everyone’s talking about the tiger
going crazy. That tiger aint going crazy, that tiger went tiger!”
