Polymer Material for Utilization in the Nonvolatile Memory Devices
IMEC, Belgium, presented a polymer material for utilization in the nonvolatile memory devices. Films
of this polymer reveal nonvolatile switching effects with the characteristics similar to those reported in other materials. The effect is based on the intrin- sic molecular electronic mechanism and depends very little on the electrode material and dimension. Current-voltage characteristics show the reproducible nonvolatile switching effect. The effect is observed not only when using two metallic electrodes but also when using two semiconducting electrodes, which reveals the intrinsic nature of the switching pheno- menon.

Together with unique electronic properties, poly- heteroarylenes possess outstanding technological characteristics. They are soluble in many organic solvents and reveal excellent film forming properties, so that solid homogeneous films from 2nm to 300μm

thick can be prepared using dip, drop, spin coating, and printing techniques. The films are chemostable, thermostable (softening and destruction temperatures exceed 400° C (752° Fahrenheit)), hard (modulus of elasticity ~3000 MPa), and transparent (optical gap ~ 4.2 eV). They can be operated in the air without any noticeable degradation.
