Erectile Dysfunction

When you have ED, something goes wrong during one of the steps that causes you to get and keep an erection.

How an Erection Works

1 You see, feel or think about something sexually arousing.

2 Your brain sends impulses that cause the muscles in your corpora cavernosa (two spongy

chambers that run along the length of your penis) to relax.

3 This allows blood to flow into your penis, making it bigger and creating pressure to give you an erection.

4 The blood gets

trapped by the tunica albuginea (a layer of tissue wrapped

Erect Penis around the corpora cavernosa). This keeps your penis erect.

5 When you ejaculate from your urethra, muscles contract and the blood flows back out of your penis.

Your doctor will help you figure out which part of this process is causing your ED.
