Letters
personal investment has provided for this province a
destination resort unique to the central west coast of British
Columbia and is among the most beautiful marinas on
the west coast of North America. The re-development of
Gorge Harbour Marina has provided Cortes Island with a
state of the art Marina facility, including a restaurant rated
as among the best from California to Alaska in boating
publications. Other services provided include a general
store, fueling services to the boating public and islanders
alike, a lodge for guests and a ten acre campground with
playground and gazebo. The Gorge Harbour Marina is one
of Cortes Island’s largest employers during the boating
season and utilized a large number of locals during the $3.5
million reconstruction of the facilities between March and
August of 2009. Gorge Harbour is truly the benchmark for
all other Marine facilities on the west coast of BC to aspire
to reach in terms of facilities, and its focus on the social and
ecological responsibilities it shares with its neighbours.
Michelle and Richard Glickman have transformed a
small, neglected marina, which had been up for sale for
several years when they purchased the property five years
ago, into a world class marina and camping resort. The
Glickman’s have provided the community of Cortes Island
a cultural center for the community’s use and enjoyment
providing music and cultural events throughout the
year. They have reached out into the community and are
providing shelter to women at risk within their lodge.
The Glickman’s have invested in Cortes Island for all
the right reasons; the area’s beauty, their love of Desolation
Sound, and the unique quality of Gorge Harbour. They
admit openly that they did not expect to see any significant
return on the millions of dollars invested in Gorge Harbour
and Cortes Island. This development of the unique assets
of Gorge Harbour Marina was undertaken, not for profit,
not in a joint venture with an American multinational, but
with the fullest respect for the environmental needs and
integrity of this enclosed body of water, the Glickmans’
understanding of the underlying desires of the people of
Cortes Island and mindful of the needs of the community
at large.
The proposed shellfish lease will remove any access
to useful anchorage, and create extremely hazardous
navigational challenges in and out of the restricted access
to the marina.
The proposed shellfish lease will destroy the treasure
that the Glickmans have created for this province and the
boating public.
I respectfully urge you and this government to deny
the application by the Klahoose Shellfish Ltd for its
aquaculture proposal in Gorge Harbour and to assist that
organization to locate in an area better suited to their needs.
Yours truly,
Gerry Smith, CEBS
Langley, BC.
