The entire process, from assembly to packaging remains in the hands of
the same technician. He alone is personally responsible for the instru-
ments handled by him. This motivates the workers and influences the level
of quality. That way Harder and Steenbeck produces and delivers around
2000 airbrushes per month. Before each package is sent out it is sealed,
so that the customer can be sure to receive a factory- new product. For-
tunately this company has very few complaints, about 2 per month, which
is only about 0.1%.
The future of the airbrush lies in the production process.
Although not much has changed in the last 100 years in airbrush technique itself, production methods have changed tremen-
dously within the last 30 years. Until 1980 the airbrush parts were still entirely made by hand. Each part was individually turned
in a lathe. No wonder that only about 200 pieces per year – wrapped in old newspapers’ would leave the factory. According to
owner/manager Jens Matthiessen the trend to optimize production in order to produce instruments of highest quality will con-
tinue. Improvements of airbrushes will mostly be realized in new designs and ease of handling.
The factory is constantly coming up with new technological ideas. Many are discarded; others are designed with CAD programs.
The machines are frequently producing new parts for prototypes. Only after a new model has passed all in-house tests and various
user tests, it will make it into the regular production line. Feedback from users and dealers is important before any changes are
made. This leads to fresh ideas and new possibilities in the airbrush technique.
