During the production process a lot of scrap metal is produced. In the manu-
facture of the airbrush body about 80 percent of the material can be re-used,
20 percent is true waste material. With other parts, for example the cup, the
ratio can be reversed. The metal shavings are collected, cleaned and will be
given to a metal refinery.
Even freshly milled parts must already show high luster.
A worker checks the finished raw parts before they go to a washing machine in
order to have all oils removed. Following this process the parts go into the polish-
ing vat. Here they are tumbled in ceramic granules for 10 to 12 hours until they
are shiny. Very sensitive parts such as needles or nozzles will not go through this
polishing process. These parts are just put into an ultrasound bath and are then
hand sanded and polished.
Quality control – in touch with every component.
After a second cleaning process the parts are then put onto racks. Now it is time
for a first detail check with a magnifying glass to check for mistakes, scratches
and similar faults. If the problem can be repaired, mistakes will then be corrected
manually. If a correction is not possible, the part will be returned to the metal
refinery. The percentage of waste material at this production stage lays around
10%.
The airbrush body is completed by manually fusing the stem for the cup and the
valve connection to the body. Then components leave the factory for a few days
in order to be plated.
Metal plating determines the look.
During the plating process the originally gold-
yellow colored brass parts receive their final
coating. A chrome or nickel coat gives the
airbrush a silver finish; the black chrome coat creates a black body. The center
ring of the Evolution model is even gold plated. During this plating process the
airbrush is dipped into various baths, first a degreasing bath, then a copper bath
and finally a chrome and nickel bath. Dry and polished the parts then come back
where they are inspected once more using magnification to see if any scratches
happened during transport.
