Water Rescues
At the end of last year we requested help in
purchasing a boat as there were so many rescues
involving birds trapped on water. With the help of two
very kind people, who donated towards a boat and
associated safety equipment and training, we were
able to acquire a boat that made things much easier.
By the time spring was with us, the amount of
calls re swans etc caught with fishing tackle really
increased. We were very fortunate that through the Simon King Wildlife
Productions Company, a kayak was donated to us by a company called
Avon Craft. They came with the kayak and were going to take some press
photographs but little did they know that they were to be involved in a swan
release and then a cygnet capture. They learnt first hand, that it’s not always
easy to catch a cygnet caught up in fishing tackle with two grumpy parents
around trying to protect their brood!
Fortunately the cygnet was caught and taken straight away to our vets,
Quantock Veterinary Hospital in Bridgwater. The hook and line were removed and
in less than an hour the cygnet was returned to his family much to their relief.
Both vessels have seen a great deal of use and we cannot thank our
supporters and Avon Craft enough for the tremendous help that these boats
have been to us.
