Influenza viruses are easily spread from person to person
and through shared surfaces and areas. Below are the three
main ways the flu virus is likely to be spread within the
workplace with guidance for individuals within you company
on how to protect themselves and others around them.
When an infected person coughs and/or sneezes they
release droplets. These droplets can spread and are a
risk to people in close proximity. It is advisable that
all individuals clean their hands frequently,
especially after coughing or sneezing.
It is likely that after coughing or sneezing droplets
will remain on the infected person’s hands. Germs
and viruses can survive for up to 20 minutes
on hands and soft surfaces. Where practicable,
effective hand hygiene products and facilities should
be provided, both for permanent staff and visitors to
the premises.
When droplets land or when infected hands touch
objects within the workplace, the virus can survive for
up to 24 hours on these hard surfaces. Any surface
or object within a work environment could
potentially be shared between individuals, and
is therefore at risk of housing the harmful virus.
All surfaces touched by hands should be cleaned
regularly with the appropriate cleaning materials.
