The SCAD industrial design department offers a truly unique design education experience for both under-
graduate and graduate students pursing various degrees in design. Students may choose from a suite of
degree programs in industrial design, design management, service design, design for sustainability, inter-
action design and marine design. Many of these programs are unlike anything else in the marketplace and
are unique to SCAD.
Live/sponsored projects have become the hallmark of the SCAD industrial design program with students
participating in real projects with real clients; having real problems to solve and real deadlines to meet.
Students from junior, senior and graduate levels participate with captains of industry in a program that is
as close to real-world as can be simulated and is conducted within the safe confines of the department and
under the guidance of expert faculty.
Students are taught by 12 full-time and two part-time faculty members at SCAD-Savannah. Each faculty
member, in addition to excellent and award-winning teaching backgrounds, has prior professional experi-
ence in a wide variety of industries. Nearly all have terminal degrees and most have 10 years or more pro-
fessional experience.
Students spend from one quarter to an entire year in focused internships working hand-in-hand with many
of the nation’s top design professionals. Students return from these experiences more prepared, focused
and skilled and have some practical professional experience under their belt.
Recently students have had the opportunity to travel to China, Canada, Taiwan and Argentina. Students
who participate in these trips come back with a larger sense of the world, a better understanding of how
they fit in it, and a greater respect for how design can impact futures. Additionally, students return with a
broader sense of design, enhanced skills and a much more productive attitude.
The SCAD industrial design department utilizes a 44,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. The Gulf-
stream Center for Industrial and Furniture Design houses industry standard studio and production facilities
including five rapid prototypers, a 3-axis CNC mill and 5-axis CNC router, laser cutter, vacuum press, full
wood, metal and plastic shops, paint booths, and fiberglassing facilities.
The SCAD industrial design program, now in its 14th year, has many successful alumni in the industry, some
in prominent leadership positions with companies such as BMW DesignworksUSA, Continuum, IDEO, Frog,
Procter & Gamble, GE, MasterCraft Boats, Newell Rubbermaid, JCB and Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation.
