Industry Partnerships
In 2008-09 the industrial design department was involved in more than 20 industry-sponsored projects
with such companies as JCB, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Dell, Case-mate, Carbon Motors, Kicker,
Freescale Semiconductor, Philips Design, PlayPower, Newell Rubbermaid, Kiz Toys and Kids II. Students
participate in real projects with real clients to solve actual problems and meet deadlines, making these
experiences as close to the real world as can be simulated. Students at the junior, senior and graduate lev-
els participate in the projects, gaining valuable work experience, improved skills and an understanding of
the professional world. Additionally, students are forced to work in a mature and fast-paced environment
driven by client goals and deliverables. Competition to work on these projects has raised students’ stan-
dards of expectation, and the sponsored project program has truly become the hallmark of the industrial
design curriculum.
Individual companies partner with the SCAD industrial design department to research, design and develop
new products and add value to established product lines. Students work with clients using team-based
activities and individual skills to conceive and develop new, innovative approaches. Projects provide stu-
dents with opportunities to experience the design process in a real-world situation, and can often result in
internships with corporate partners.
