Service Design
Increasingly, services represent the most significant part of the economy in sectors that include digi-
tal media, healthcare, finance, entertainment, telecommunications, retail, leisure and the Internet. Service
design is the application of range of established and new design processes, methods and skill-sets in the
development of innovative services. Service-centric thinking places people, networks and experience at
the core of how services are designed and invented. Service design is now recognized as a new and emerg-
ing design profession that entails service innovation and experience design, where designers consider the
architecture and touch points people use to engage with a service, and how services are interconnected
as ecologies.
Interaction Design
The minor in interaction design teaches students the theories, methods and practices for adding the com-
ponent of human and product behaviors to the form and structure designed into interactive products and
systems. Students learn about core theories in human capabilities that determine their abilities (limitations)
and their emotional responses to interactive systems, how to evaluate the success of interactive products
in the field and in the lab, and how to create stories based from field research and convert them into refined
interactive products.
Marine Design
The marine design minor emphasizes research, user needs, development of hull forms, exteriors and inte-
riors of a variety of watercraft, and encourages students to combine aspects of naval architecture, human
factors, interior design, CAD and material exploration to create innovative solutions that are both visually
appealing and functional.
