High Quality Care
The Foundation Trust invested over £1m within the maternity service,
including a very successful recruitment campaign to increase the number
of midwives. As well as focusing on strengthening the recruitment and
retention of midwives, the division has started to plan for a new
birthing centre to offer women choice of maternity care.
In September 2008 our school nurses supported
the launch of the human papilloma virus (HPV)
vaccine national programme and were
instrumental in offering 12 and 13 year old girls
this vaccine, with a three year catch up
programme offering the vaccine to older girls.
A new modern facility to help improve the care
for patients undergoing major surgery was
opened in February 2009. This is the base for
our national centre for pseudomyxoma
peritonei as well as for other patients
undergoing major surgery. 23 new
medical beds were opened in the
emergency division this year to make it
possible to admit all the patients who
needed emergency hospital care over
the winter.
A new isolation ward was opened in
December 2008 supporting patients
requiring isolation to get the best care
available and that other patients are not
put at risk.
