If you stick to these simple rules it will help minimise any
problems you might encounter.
In Darwin I went through a lock that was 20feet 2inches wide
with a boat that was 20 feet wide. We arrived at dawn when
there was little wind and had shore help to fend off. There
was no room for fenders.
Next month we look at : Watch keeping, sleep patterns
and energy conservation.
Stop press. American authorities have issued an advanced
warning about the continued efficiency of the GPS system
with minor disruption from some time in 2009. Apparently to
maintain good coverage of signal 24 satellites are required.
Currently there are 31 in operation. The problem is some of
these satellites are now approaching the end of their useful
life. From some time next year there will be disruption of
the service as the old satellites start to degrade. This will
continue for some considerable time until more new satellites
can be launched. There is a build time and a budget that
restricts the launch of new satellites, so some disruption
seems inevitable.
Last month an error crept into the text;
Admiralty chart 5022 should have read Admiralty chart 5011.
The spring line has been cast off and the boat is able to motor
ahead clear of the boat in front
