From Very Good to Sustainably Excellent
With your help, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University
of Texas at Austin will become one of the world’s preeminent academic centers for
research and education in the chemical sciences.
What will it look like in 10 years?
• It will be self-sustaining. The critical elements—world-class
scholars; superior students, postdoctoral fellows and research
scientists; stable funding and state-of-the-art facilities—will
ensure excellence in perpetuity.
• The opportunity for scientific discovery will be limited only by the
creativity and imagination of its faculty and students.
• Faculty will be recognized internationally by election to the
National Academies or the Royal Society. There will be a
Nobel Laureate (or two).
• Distinguished members of the faculty will lead the teaching of
undergraduates at all levels and undergraduate majors will be
encouraged to conduct original research under their supervision.
• The products of our efforts—new knowledge, new technology and
superbly trained scientists and engineers—will enrich the lives of
Texans and, indeed, of all humankind.
