Investing in the Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry
Public universities must rely today on a combination of public and private
support to achieve excellence. Whereas the State of Texas provided 54% of
The University of Texas at Austin’s budget 30 years ago, only 16% of the
budget comes from state appropriations today. And while it is true that The
University of Texas System has one of the largest endowments in the country,
that endowment serves more than 150,000 students on 15 campuses. The
University of Texas at Austin ranks 11th in per-student funding from all
sources among the nation’s 12 major public state universities with which we
compare ourselves. We must do better. Private investment, now more than
ever, is necessary to bridge the gap between what we have and what we need
for excellence.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, one of the strongest
departments in the university, seeks your help to make the transition from “very
good to sustainably excellent.” Substantial new resources under the control of
the department are pivotal to our success. We have shown that we can do more
with less, but if we are to sustain our continued drive for distinction and achieve
our goal of being “one of the preeminent academic centers for re search and
education in the chemical sciences in the world,” we need to secure significant
additional funding. Private investment is critical in helping us reach this goal.
We need your support and we welcome your contribution at any level; your
managed gift benefits the department in perpetuity.
Please join us in our mission and enable us to continue our
commitment to change and improve lives through education
and research in chemistry and biochemistry.
