From the Chairman
Like many of our alumni and
friends, both UT-Austin and
the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry are suffering
due to the economic downturn.
Although the situation at UT is
not as grim as at most other state
university systems, every facet
of our program feels the pinch.
Much of the news is bittersweet.
For example, just across from
Welch Hall, the new Norman
Hackerman Building is starting
to emerge. Some of our synthetic
organic faculty members will begin to move into this building during
the Spring of 2011, but there is funding available to finish just one of
the two floors assigned to our department. The top floor will be “cold
shelled” unless resources can be found to complete it. We face similar
challenges in all aspects of the academic enterprise: research funding,
new and replacement instrumentation costs, funds for graduate and
undergraduate student fellowships and scholarships, and faculty and
staff salaries.
In this issue of Chemical Compositions we have chosen not to focus on
the negative consequences of current funding shortfalls, but rather we
provide you with a clear idea of what we aspire to be, why we have
chosen the goals we have, and how we plan to achieve them. In the
end, it all comes down to people: faculty and students here in Austin,
our alumni, and other friends of the department. If, through donation
of your time or resources, you are already a partner in our quest to
transition “from very good to sustainably excellent”, we thank you.
If you’ve been thinking of getting involved but haven’t yet taken the
leap, please contact me by phone or email, and let’s talk about it.
