nanoclusters. This work has application in water purification and sensing of
toxic ions in the environment. We have also recently begun work within the
University of Oregon’s new Center for Green Materials Chemistry to develop
greener processes for electronic device fabrication. I recently had the privilege
of returning to Austin for my first business trip to campus since I graduated;
I was the department’s Distinguished Alumni speaker in February 2009. It
was a great opportunity to meet the fantastic new faculty in the department
and to catch up with some of the faculty from my time in Austin. I was
especially excited to learn about the recent development efforts of the depart-
ment, which include beginning the process of establishing an endowed chair
to recognize Jonathan Sessler’s research and service to the department. I look
forward to seeing this development effort continue! On a personal side, my
wife and I celebrated the birth of our first child last year, Julia Shea Johnson.
I look forward to my upcoming promotion to Associate Professor with tenure
this summer and many return visits to Texas!

the direction of Professor Milan Mrksich in the Department of Chemistry
until February of 2009. Now, I am an assistant professor in the Department
of Chemistry, Kyung Hee University, Korea. I am extending my graduate and
postdoctoral research. My research interests focus on the use of nanomaterials
as well as miniaturized analytical devices for applications to bio-analysis.
