UT Austin and the
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Funding Sources
There are seven general funding sources for the University (see 2007-2008
Total University Sources chart below, Office of the Provost). Of these funds,
six categories are then made available to the department (2008-2009 Depart-
mental Sources chart below):
• Tuition
• State general revenue
• Self supporting auxiliary enterprises: Intercollegiate Athletics, Housing &
Food, Continuing Education, Erwin Center, Parking & Transportation, the Per-
froming Arts Center, the University Health Services, Charter School, KUT, Mc-
Donald Observatory
• Academic enhancement: contracts and grants, gifts, the Executive MBA, Field
Trips, Orientation, Application & Library fees
• Indirect costs: depreciation and use allowances, general administrative and gen-
eral expenses, sponsored project administration, operation and maintenance ex-
penses, library expenses, departmental administration expenses, and student ad-
ministration and services
• Available University Fund (AUF): the spendable portion of the Permanent Uni-
versity Fund (PUF), a public endowment that provides financial support to insti-
tutions in The University of Texas and Texas A&M University systems. The PUF
was established in 1876 by the Texas Constitution, and the income is derived
from revenue generated by West Texas land provided by the state as a financial
investment in higher education. Proceeds result from oil, gas, sulfur, and water
royalties, rentals on mineral and grazing leases, and gains on investments. The
distributed investment income from the corpus of the PUF comprises the Avail-
able University Fund.
