Although visitor numbers were up at last
month’s Asian Attractions Expo (AAE) in Seoul, with around 3,500
professionals in attendance, it still seemed pretty quiet on the show
floor.
Often when exhibitors talk of “quality over quantity” I suspect they
are covering for their disappointment at not seeing more people, but
this time I believed them – just. IAAPA reports that visitors came from
40 countries but nevertheless there was a strong feeling that the vast
majority were from China and Sourh Korea. It’s inevitable that as
exhibitions move to a different city, just as the Euro Attractions Show
does each year; they will pick up a different crowd. But with Asia as
big as it is, maybe some years down the line there will be room for
more than one Asian Attractions Expo?
The other reason people were relieved with events in Seoul was
because of the ongoing economic situation. Although Asia has been
hit, the general feeling was that, at least in this part of the world, they
are through the worst of it and people are committing to new projects.
That’s in marked contrast to Europe and North America where, even
though some parks and attractions have had a good season so far,
operators are still reluctant to make major new investments for fear of
what might be around the corner.
