++Vitalise – my saviour and second home
Pam Cocksedge celebrates 25 years of volunteering for Vitalise in 2009. She remembers her first time.
“In March 1984, my husband, Noel, and I set out from our home on the island of Sark on our first venture as volunteers to Crabhill House. It all started when we read a small advert in a magazine, requesting volunteers at various centres for disabled people. We were very happily involved with charity work on our island and felt we had much to offer and learn about disabled people. Wheels were put in motion, arrangements made. A flight, a boat crossing, a train and a minibus journey later, we walked through the doors to a hubbub of guests and staff.
We soon felt at home. Introductions to the Centre followed, with the guidance of the staff – we were reassured that nothing would be a problem. We met our guests for the week for a chat and a cuppa. We gained confidence as the week went by and felt sure we would return. It was hard work but the staff were so patient with us. The guests really appreciated the time we had to chat.
13 years ago my husband Noel died suddenly. Our times at the Centres were so happy, I felt drawn to helping others. Within two weeks I found my saviour and second home, Netley Waterside House. Over the years bonds of friendship have evolved. I am now involved at all Centres. Walking through the door there is always a friendly greeting, a guest in a wheelchair recognises me, a hug, a cuppa. Some guests even request if I can help at a Centre when they are there! Christmas and New Year at the Centres are great fun. My family keeps asking 'when will you stay home!?'
Thank you for reading about some of my wonderful times spent with Vitalise. Maybe it has sown some seeds of inspiration. If so, please consider volunteering and come and see us soon. My calendar always has dates on it for the Centres. I still have a parachute jump in mind for Vitalise this year and I will be sighted guiding with Vitalise Holidays in Bulgaria.”
We wish Pam congratulations on her 25th anniversary and many more happy years of volunteering with Vitalise.
