World gets its first
Gay Leader
The first government collapse of the
global economic crisis has thrown up the
world’s first openly-gay leader. Johanna
Sigurdardottir, a former air hostess, was
sworn in as Prime Minister last month.
Her place in the history books comes at
the most horrendous moment in her nation's
recent past. As the global meltdown began,
the collapse of Iceland’s economy was
swiftly followed by the implosion of its banks
and currency. Now its government has gone
the same way. The 66-year-old politician
lives with her partner, Jonina Leosdottir, a
journalist and playwright. The couple were
joined in a civil ceremony in 2002.
A change of climate
Newly elected US President Barack Obama's vow to lead the world in tackling
climate change has been warmly welcomed by the leaders of the European
Union as they prepare to unveil their own environmental action plan.
"Europe has gained a strong partner," said Czech Environment Minister
Martin Bursik, whose country holds the EU's rotating presidency. "Barack
Obama is quickly implementing what he has promised. He acts efficiently,"
he added.
"To protect our climate and our collective security, we must call together a
truly global coalition," President Obama said at a White House ceremony, in a
clear swipe at former president George W. Bush's reluctance to take control
of international efforts to combat climate change. "We will make it clear to the
world that America is ready to lead."
