SERVANT LEADERS

There are three questions you should ask yourself: 1. What type of leader are you? 2. What type of leader would you like to be?

3. What type of leader is the one that will best meet the needs of the members, will best help to fulfill the AFSA mission, “To advocate an improved quality of life and economic fairness that will support the well-being of all enlisted military personal and their families,” and the best to achieve the goals of the organization?

When she asked an employee about the second company, hesitantly, she was told, “I like it. This is only my first month here. In my department, we have 12 people and 10 of us are new. My supervisor gives me the goals I am to meet and the projects that need to be done by a specific date. Any decisions that need to be made, the CEO makes them. No guesswork involved. I’m told what to do and I do it. You’ll like it here. Just do what you’re told and you’ll be fine.”

When she asked an employee about the third company, she was told, “I enjoy working here. I’m lucky enough to have a ‘hands-off’ boss who allows me to make decisions and lets me be as creative as I want. I’m given projects that need to be completed and I go back to my office and figure out how to get it done. From the top down, that is pretty much how the entire organization works. Most of the people here are highly qualified. We work on

our own and if we need input, all we have to do is ask. You’ll fit right in. When do you start?”

When she asked an employee about the last company, the man pointed to a lady standing in the middle of the room with a huge smile and going from person to person shaking their hands and exchanging what looked like words of encouragement. The employee said, “That’s our CEO. Every Wednesday, she sets aside time to come out to speak to us about the vision of the company, ways to be more productive and how, if one succeeds, we all succeed. When I listen to her speak, I feel as if I can conquer the world. She’s a great motivator. I’m sorry I’m going on and on. Yes, I really like working here.”

There are many different types of leadership styles—participative or democratic, autocratic, laissez-faire, transformational and servant—that are commonly used today. Depending

The “Servant Leader” is merely a mind- set to serve first, put people first and to put AFSA’s mission first.

As we celebrate the Air Force’s 70th anniversary, we do so with confidence that many members of our great Association have contributed significantly to what is the world’s greatest Air Force. From the dawn of flight to today’s most advanced weapons systems, the contribution of AFSA members can never be underestimated nor overstated.

It requires the entire body of AFSA— members, employees, executive council, chapters and divisions—to work together so AFSA will continue to be the powerful voice of the Air Force enlisted members, past and present, and be the professional military organization of choice for the Total Air Force enlisted corps and their families.

We Thank You. We Appreciate You. We are AFSA—Servant Leaders.
