The AMA Executive Council is working to protect our members from the federal

registration process that was launched by the FAA in December. Although registration makes sense at some threshold, the process runs counter to Congress’ intent in Section 336 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. We are considering a number

of things to address this issue. Our members follow a comprehensive set of safety and privacy guidelines, which constantly evolve to accommodate new technologies and modeling disciplines. We believe AMA membership should be an alternative to registration. Visit www. modelaircraft.org/gov to learn more.

I don’t appreciate sitting indoors, contending with the winter doldrums. For those who feel as I do, have you

tried indoor fl ying? It’s a hoot! Check out local clubs, hobby shops, or the AMA Contest Calendar for a site near you. Go to modelaircraft.org/events/ calendar.aspx. If there is an indoor site near you,

please consider other pilots when you are fl ying. The air often becomes extremely congested with models. A demolition derby is not fun with nice aircraft. If you want to do that, wait until combat time!

Flying outside in the snow is also fun—if you don’t mind the cold. Cold batteries have considerably less power. To remedy

this, keep them in your car or pocket. Where I live, winter is extremely cold

and we use HotHands Hand Warmers. These little bags of heat perform well and last for several hours. You might even put one inside your plane to keep the batteries warm.

As I reviewed the contents of this issue, I realized that I have several of the review models. The UMX Radian and the UMX Whipit are lots of fun. The Radian will allow you to learn

some basic soaring techniques. Try climbing with motor power for a specifi c amount of time and then see how long you can glide. You will be surprised by how long you can stay in the air and it allows you to enjoy thermal activity. The Whipit is even more of a challenge. If you have good thermal activity, fl ights of more than an hour are possible. It’s fun!

Joining a club allows you to extend the enjoyment of model aviation by sharing it with others. Belonging to a club can offer friendship and an enjoyable place to fl y. The club will only be as good as the efforts that the members generate for it. Fun-fl ys, auctions, fl ea markets, community benefi ts, and competition events are some common club activities. AMA has a Leader Club program

that provides direction for clubs. Details can be found at: modelaircraft.org/ fi les/708.pdf or contact Erin Dobbs (erind@modelaircraft.org) for additional information.
