Milking It con nued from page 8

Needless to say, as the du es of our business take me away from housework, Grace takes over with cleaning, laundry, etc. Nobody can clean like Grace. I think it is obvious we could not do this with- out the help of our children. What a joy they are.”

Describe your typical work day. “We start the machines and make sure the cows are up between 4-5 a.m. With the fi rst milking done, we clean the barn and check all the cows, young and old. We start processing milk before 10 a.m. (vat-pasteurize milk for bo ling, bu er, cheese, etc.). It takes all day to process milk into cheese. We milk again star ng around 5:30 pm. There is always cleaning, packaging cheese, bo ling milk, cleaning, tas ng cheese, cleaning, and did I men on cleaning? This goes on every day. Sunday, we only milk, perform mandatory cleaning and check cows, so a er Church and dinner it is our coveted nap me. There is always paperwork, packaging, cheese fl ipping and wash- ing. It is truly endless. It used to drive me crazy, but I have fi nally accepted it.”

What are your business hours? “The farm store is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. It is an honor store where you sign your name in a book and place your money in the slot in the wall. If you would like to watch the cows being milked, we can arrange that. Some of us are shy and do not like to be watched and some of us are hams and love it, so please call ahead.”

Where else can LOMAH products be purchased? “You can purchase products at the Bentonville (Ark.) Farmer’s

The Johnson family from le to right: John, Will, Stanley, Donna and Grace.

Market, the Cherry Street Farmer’s market in Tulsa, some Reasor’s grocery stores (they will be expanding their line of our products soon), Pe y’s Fine Foods, Cimarron Meats, Euromart, Seigi’s Deli, and several places in the Oklahoma City area as a distributor now picks up milk every Tuesday for delivery.”

What is the best way to contact you folks about the dairy and its products? “You can reach Stanley at 918-533-7134 or email us at: milkcheese. johnson@gmail.com. The dairy address is 23800 South 690 Road, Wyando e, OK 74370. To get here, turn east onto 240 Road (Tiff City Road) off of Highway 10 about fi ve miles north of Grove. You’ll go about 3.5 miles east before you come to the old Bradshaw store. Turn le (north) on 690 Road and we are the fi rst place on your right.”
