VITAMIN C PLUS CHEMO DOUBLES PANCREATIC CANCER SURVIVAL Adding high-dose vitamin C to standard treatment doubled survival in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer in a new clinical trial. Patients with Stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer received standard chemotherapy or chemotherapy plus infusions of high- dose vitamin C. “This is a deadly disease with very poor
outcomes for patients,”
says Joe Cullen, M.D., senior author of the study.
“When we started the trial, we thought it would be a success if we got to 12 months survival, but we doubled overall survival to 16 months. Not only does it increase overall survival, but the patients seem to feel better with the treatment,” he added.
3-IN-1 PILL EFFECTIVE AGAINST UNCONTROLLED HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE A combination of low doses of three antihypertensive drugs in a single pill was more effective than standard care, according to a study published in JAMA. After just one month, 81% of participants taking the pill, called GMRx2, achieved blood pressure control versus 55% who were taking one blood pressure medication. Many people must take multiple medications to control their blood pressure, leading to low adherence rates.

more effective than the Mediterranean diet for weight loss and reducing harmful inflammatory dietary compounds, according to a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition. For 16 weeks, participants ate a low-fat vegan diet, which consisted of fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans (and no dairy or other animal products), or a Mediterranean diet, which focused on fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, lean white meat, low-fat dairy, and extra virgin olive oil (with very limited red meat and full-fat dairy). They then ate their usual diet for a four- week wash-out period before switching to the opposite diet for 16 weeks. Eating a low-fat vegan diet led to a weight loss of 13 pounds and reduced advanced glycation end products (AGEs) by 73%, compared to no reductions

with the Mediterranean diet. “AGEs occur when sugar reacts with fats and proteins in the bloodstream,” says David Brownstein, M.D., author of Dr. David Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health newsletter. “They
are very inflammatory in the body and can lead to tissue damage. The best way to avoid AGEs is to eliminate all sources of refined sugar, which can lower one’s risk for diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.”

LOSS OF SMELL LINKED TO MORE THAN 100 DISEASES Losing your sense of smell can be an early sign of disease, according to a study in Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience. Olfactory dysfunction has been linked to 139 medical conditions, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. However, researchers found that sensory enrichment (daily exposure to a diverse range of odors) reduces inflammation, can improve brain health, and may even reduce the onset of disease. “Olfactory enrichment can improve the memory of older adults by 226%,” said lead researcher Michael Leon, Ph.D.
