Kelly began marketing his military and broadcast experience as an asset to the major TV networks. After reviewing his tape, Fox News

brought Kelly on board at the end of 2002. A few months later he was in Kuwait, waiting for the war to start. Kelly embedded with the 2nd Bri-

forces move into Iraq,” he says. “It’s mind-blowing.” His reporting captured a lot of

attention as the world witnessed the ugliness of combat. While Kelly’s military service

brought a level of measured comfort to his reporting, it was still the first time he was in the middle of a war. One viral clip shows Kelly’s bloodied face after a bomb exploded nearby. “I had never been in real combat

before. And this was real combat,” he says. “This is combat, and it was hap-

Once he came back to the U.S.,

he covered the Pentagon and White House, where he traveled on Air Force One with President George W. Bush. He took a break from politics,

CNN in Key Ratings Carl Higbie and Rob Schmitt set new audience records.

I

t just keeps on happening! Newsmax TV hosts Carl Higbie and Rob Schmitt beat CNN in

key ratings during inauguration week in January. Carl Higbie FRONTLINE drew nearly 810,000 total viewers on the

day after President Donald Trump was sworn into ofice — a number so large, it outperformed all of CNN’s programs that day. Higbie’s show airs weeknights at 5 p.m. ET. Rob Schmitt Tonight followed closely behind. His 7 p.m. ET show

garnered nearly 700,000 viewers, beating CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront by 4%.

A rising tide seemed to lift all programming boats. Newsline, Newsmax TV’s noon show with host Bianca de la Garza,

delivered one of its top five telecasts of all time the day after the inauguration as well. New prime-time show Finnerty delivered its second-highest-rated

telecast ever, drawing more than 530,000 viewers on Jan. 21. Hosted by Rob Finnerty weeknights at 8 p.m., Finnerty had its all-time top telecast on Inauguration Day. The numbers are even more impressive since CNN is carried in about 7 million more homes than Newsmax TV, often with a better position on the programming guide. As CNN’s ratings have been in a free fall, the network announced in late January layoffs of more than 200 employees.

York City morning news world, he got married and started thinking about where his career might take him next. Kelly was working on creating his

own concept when he ran into News- max CEO Chris Ruddy. “We talked a little bit about

Trump and the mainstream media,” Kelly recalls. Before he knew it, Kelly was pre-

sented with an “amazing opportu- nity” to join Newsmax, and “the rest is history.” Even with years of hosting under

his belt, Kelly is “always preparing” for his next show. His thought process is already underway by the time he arrives in the office — hours before showtime — where he starts watching, thinking, and engaging in conversations. “The best preparation for a show
