Vitamin B3 May Improve COPD N


icotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B3, may be key to


improving the quality of life for the 600 million people worldwide who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Researchers at the University of Copenhagen and Bispebjerg Hospital in Denmark gave study participants either a placebo or vitamin B3 in doses of 2 grams a day. Those receiving B3 experienced a signifi cant drop of 53% in the infl ammation marker interleukin 8 (IL 8) after six weeks, and the eff ect increased to 63% after an additional 12 weeks of treatment. “We show that nicotinamide riboside . . . can reduce lung infl ammation in COPD patients,” said study co-author Morten Scheibye-Knudsen, Ph.D. “This is signifi cant, because infl ammation can lead to reduced lung function in these patients.”

Higher levels of leptin, a hormone that helps maintain normal body weight, are associated with healthier white brain matter, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Scientists conducted neuropsychological evaluations, measured concentrations of leptin, and evaluated MRIs of cognitively healthy people. Middle-aged adults with higher levels of leptin had healthier white matter, indicating that leptin may protect against damage to the brain.

Participants with higher levels of omega-3s (found in fatty fish) had lower rates of colon, stomach, and lung cancer, in addition to lower rates of other digestive tract cancers. High levels of omega- 6 fatty acids (found in nuts, seeds, and eggs) led to lower rates of 14 diff erent cancers, including brain, bladder, and melanoma.

Middle-aged and older adults who ate 2 ounces of pistachios a day for 12 weeks experienced a substantial increase in macular pigment optical density (MPOD), which protects the eyes from the blue light emitted by digital screens and LED lights, and age-related damage. Lutein, a powerful antioxidant found in pistachios, is believed to be responsible for the beneficial eff ect.
