PRODUCT UPDATE: CES 2024 SPECIAL
PHOTONICS SENSING INNOVATIONS
UNVEILED AT CES 2024 A round-up of some of the latest photonics sensing and imaging tech launched at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada
CAMERAS & IMAGING
Gemini 2 XL Orbbec introduced the Gemini 2 XL long-range, 3D camera, delivering accurate and reliable data in various lighting conditions from pitch black to outdoors. The Gemini 2 XL will enable robot designers to access premium visual information at a fraction of the cost of current solutions. It features superior RGB-D quality, providing data
LI-AR0830-YUV-MIPI and LI-AR2020-MIPI embedded cameras Leopard Imaging launched two new embedded cameras, LI-AR0830-YUV- MIPI and LI-AR2020-MIPI, powered by Onsemi sensors.
The Onsemi AR2020 and AR0830
sensors capture images in either linear or enhanced dynamic range (eDR) modes, with a rolling- shutter readout. Both sensors are designed to
deliver high−quality performance while consuming very low power. They are supported by a 1.4µm BSI pixel from Onsemi and promise excellent optical performance in low light and NIR wavelengths. The features of the sensors
provide a powerful data capturing device at the edge that can be programmed through several options to deliver optimal bandwidth at very low power. Both cameras are well received by customers with applications of automation, robotics, A-IoT, drones, etc.

suitable for a wide range of AI-driven recognition and tracking applications that require detection of small objects while excelling in high-reflectivity environments. The deep learning algorithms can generate a complete phase map around small objects and fixtures by overcoming challenges faced by traditional algorithms due to shadow, speckle pattern size, and illumination condition. The camera offers excellent performance in various lighting conditions, including direct sunlight and outdoor environments. Conventional algorithms struggle to calculate depth/phase in environmental
conditions with highly reflective surfaces, direct
sunlight, low visibility, sharp shape-cased shadows, small texture- caused shadow, etc. to calculate the depth/phase which results in a spotted image with missing depth areas. Orbbec’s AI algorithms create a solid complete phase map output even under these challenging conditions. Furthermore, there is no need for costly vision
processors. While similar cameras in the market are either very expensive or require costly external computing power, the high-performance Gemini 2 XL provides engineers with a cost-efficient, high-accuracy option. It is just one of the reasons why this 3D camera has been attractring a lot of attention.

OX01J image sensor Omnivision announced a new 1.3MP OX01J image sensor for automotive 360-degree surround-view systems and rear-view cameras. The OX01J is a raw image sensor with top-of-the-line LED flicker mitigation and 140dB high dynamic range. Availability of the OX01J provides automotive OEMs with the flexibility to purchase just the image sensor if they already have their own backend image signal processor architecture. The OX01J provides exceptional imaging performance across a range of
challenging lighting conditions, along with a compact form factor and lowest power consumption. It features a 3µm pixel in a 1/3.55-inch optical format with excellent low-light performance and ultra-low power. It comes in an a-CSP package for the smallest possible solution and is built on Omnivision’s PureCel Plus architecture, which is renowned for its low-light sensitivity and exceptional signal-to-noise ratio performance. The OX01J is ASIL-B safety compliant. It is sampling now and will be in mass production in October 2024.

High-resolution fisheye sensor 2Pi Optics displayed a newly introduced high-resolution fisheye sensor based on optical metalens technology. The innovation is set to enable the further miniaturisation of cameras used in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), AR/VR, UAVs, robotics and other industrial applications. The new flat fisheye lens
produces crisp, 180-degree panoramic images. The technology

replaces bulky and costly conventional wide-FOV lenses – which are typically composed of multiple stacked lens pieces – with a single, thin, flat metalens. This approach enables the design of ultra-compact, high-performance optical imagers and sensors. 2Pi’s metasurface-enabled
cameras and 3D depth sensor modules can be configured for a diverse range of applications, including sensors for AR/VR
headsets, whereby the cameras can be used for environment mapping, hand/eye tracking, as well as gesture and facial recognition. Their small size and weight present a crucial advantage for wearable devices such as headsets and handsets, and their ability to achieve a field of view matching that of human vision is essential to creating an immersive experience for users.
