ision and automation projects are underway again as order books fill up following the
disruption of the last 15 months. Te pandemic is still very much present, but what’s causing most consternation among vision providers is the shortage in semiconductor chips that looks set to continue at least until the end of the year. Basler’s CEO, Dietmar Ley, said the shortage is ‘the biggest risk’ to the machine vision industry’s recovery, while Framos’ CEO, Andreas Franz, said: ‘Everyone is on their toes to handle the situation.’ We caught up with Andreas Franz as
Framos turns 40; Basler’s chief financial officer, Hardy Mehl; Jan-Erik Schmitt of Vision Components as VC celebrates its 25th anniversary; and LMI’s Terry Arden following his decision to step down as LMI CEO after 18 years with the company, in a series of articles starting on page 14 examining the forces driving the vision industry today. A couple of those forces are Industry 4.0, where vision has a role to play, and, from a geographic standpoint, China, which is already a massive market for machine vision with companies that are strong technically and that are pouring investment into vision technology. On page 12 Isabel Yang from the China Machine Vision Union updates us on the vision market in the country, while on page 4 key figures working on making factories more connected give their views on Industry 4.0. With so much progress being made in so many areas, the future certainly looks bright for machine vision.
