Automatica 2020 cancelled amid travel restrictions
Atlas Copco boosts machine vision options with Perceptron
Automatica, which was to be held from 8 to 11 December in Munich, Germany, has been cancelled. The automation trade fair had
already been moved from June to December, but rising numbers of infections across Europe and more travel restrictions led Messe München, in agreement with VDMA Robotics and Automation, to take the decision to cancel. Messe München now plans
to hold what it calls a 'compact exhibition before the exhibition' in early summer 2021, including digital offerings. Automatica runs on a two-year cycle, so the 2021 event will bridge the gap to the 2022 show. The event organisers plan to run an online event series 'Let's talk by Automatica', looking at trends in robotics and automation. In addition, parts of the support programme for the December exhibition will be offered in a virtual setting.
Atlas Copco, a Swedish industrial tool and equipment maker, has bought US-based automated metrology supplier Perceptron in a deal worth $68.9m. Te acquisition will allow Atlas Copco to
expand further into machine vision and factory automation. It comes after Atlas Copco bought German machine vision group Isra Vision earlier this year for $1.19bn. ‘Trough Perceptron’s position in
automated metrology and robot guidance, together with the recent acquisition of Isra Vision, we are creating a strong offering in machine vision solutions,’ said Henrik Elmin, head of Atlas Copco’s Industrial Technique business area. Te proposed cash deal, approved by
Perceptron’s board and supported by its biggest shareholder, is expected to close in the
fourth quarter, subject to majority approval by Perceptron’s shareholders and regulatory approvals. Jay Freeland, chairman and interim CEO
of Perceptron, said: ‘Atlas Copco’s leadership position across a broad array of industrial markets, combined with a growing presence in the machine vision space, will allow them to fully leverage our technology to the benefit of existing and new customers, all while realising economies of scale with the potential to support growth.’ Perceptron will become part of the newly-
created machine vision solutions division within the Industrial Technique business area of the company. Atlas Copco has approximately 37,000
employees, customers in 180 countries and €9bn in annual turnover.
