Greg Blackman explores the efforts being made to improve connectivity in factories using digital twins
igital connections have been pretty important this year. Factories have their
IT and digital infrastructure, but there is a growing effort to improve how connected, in the digital sense, production plants are. Machines working in isolation aren’t good for productivity, and inspection systems are no different – factories want to be able to feed vision data into process flows and make decisions off the back of inspection results. Te article on page 24 explores
some of the work to advance the concept of Industry 4.0, including a new association that’s been set up in Germany to develop digital twins of production equipment and thereby improve connectivity. Deep learning will probably play

a role in the factories of the future, and Matthew Dale on page 10 asks how image data – the fuel for neural networks – should be labelled and managed to get the best results. Elsewhere, Keely Portway (page 18) looks at some of the latest camera technology for accurate colour vision, while Andy Extance (page 14) tackles hyperspectral imaging, extending red, green and blue to imaging over multiple wavelength bands. He writes about optical design in hyperspectral cameras, but for those wanting a more application-oriented view of the imaging technique, our latest webinar on food inspection has presentations from HySpex’s Silje Ottestad and Perception Park’s Christoph Miksits about using hyperspectral imaging to inspect different foods.
