Deep learning has already proven its worth in a number of sectors. For example, in retail, Amazon is using deep learning in combination with vision technology in its ‘GO’ stores to identify items in a shopper’s basket,
thereby removing the checkout. As the cover of this issue suggests, this revolutionary tool has now set its sights on laser processing. On page 24, Dr Ben Mills shares work his group at the

ISSUE 42 • SPRING 2018 LASER SYSTEMS EUROPE 3 32
Optoelectronic Research Centre is doing to explore how deep learning can improve the repeatability, precision, and control of femtosecond laser machining, with remarkable results achieved so far. Mills is one of 90 speakers set to present at the
Association of Industrial Laser Users’ (AILU’s) Industrial Laser Applications Symposium (ILAS) in Crewe, UK, on 20-21 March. Two plenary speakers – Professor Duncan Hand of Heriot-Watt University and Dr Stefan Kaierle of the Laser Zentrum Hannover – have also provided articles for this issue based on their upcoming presentations. On page 18, Professor Hand highlights some of the main accomplishments of CIM-Laser, a collaboration between five UK universities, while on page 20 Dr Kaierle describes how lasers can be used to join dissimilar materials for lightweight construction in automotive production and shipbuilding. Lastly, on page 22, ILAS speaker Dr Daniel Arnaldo del Cerro talks about how laser surface texturing can be used to minimise the friction of moving mechanical components, which could help reduce global energy consumption.
