NEWS FROM AILU

Collaborating in Crewe

By Dave MacLellan, Executive Director, AILU

The Sixth UK Industrial Laser Applications Symposium – ILAS 2019 AILU welcomes the laser community to the Sixth Industrial Laser Applications Symposium (ILAS), an event held every two years since 2009, on 20/21 March in Crewe, UK. ILAS has become an internationally- recognised symposium which brings together industry and academia to share information, make new connections and keep abreast of the latest in laser material processing equipment and applications. Tis year ILAS 2019 takes place at Crewe Hall in Cheshire, which offers a unique combination of stunning stately home and 21st Century conference centre, with convenient links to Crewe railway station and Manchester Airport.

Why come to ILAS 2019? In previous ILAS events, over 97 per cent of delegates who responded to the questionnaire said they would definitely invite a colleague to attend. You will experience plenty of time for networking (over coffee breaks and lunch times) with other delegates and over 30 exhibitors in a friendly and informal atmosphere. In addition, there will be four

plenary speakers from the UK, Germany and Japan, presenting the latest in their field, and 86 additional speakers presenting on topics including additive manufacturing, laser welding and cutting, laser microfabrication, surface engineering, laser cleaning, laser drilling, laser marking and ablation, systems and automation, and

diagnostics and measurement. As the five-year EPSRC-funded

Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes (CIM-Laser) comes to a close, ILAS 2019 will also give speakers from the five participating universities (Heriot-Watt, Cranfield, Cambridge, Manchester and Liverpool) the opportunity to share the outcomes of their joint research with industrial partners. Professor Duncan Hand, director of CIM-Laser and one of the plenary speakers of the symposium, introduces the centre and some of its projects overleaf. As if these weren’t reasons enough

to attend, there will also be a poster presentation, a drinks reception, and a grand symposium dinner in the Long Gallery of Crewe Hall – where the prestigious AILU Awards will be presented.

Why link industry and academia? To many, the worlds of industry and academia are seen to be parallel universes where ‘never the twain shall meet’, however at ILAS, in particular, (as in AILU generally) the interface of these two communities enriches both

to meet researchers, manufacturers and end-users

It’s a rare opportunity

significantly. Industry delegates get to see the latest topics of research and find partners to collaborate with on areas of mutual interest. Academic delegates gain knowledge of industry needs and challenges, and find practical applications that need to be addressed through applied research, and sources of funding and resources to undertake the work required. Many a project has been launched as

a result of informal conversations at ILAS between delegates over a coffee or a glass of wine. With only a short time leſt to

register, the opportunity to come to ILAS grants a rare opportunity to meet with the vast majority of the researchers, manufacturers and end-users of laser material processing equipment – all in one place.

Why gather regularly? AILU has been running since 1995, but the community is joined by new graduates every year – so for every member who retires or steps down from their role in the laser community, two new delegates are coming for the first time to meet and make relationships to further their careers. AILU has formed an Early Careers Researchers group, which brings together a new cadre of laser practitioners and researchers, and ILAS is the place where the younger delegates can meet with more experienced people who can steer and assist them in the years to come.

Expect to see vacancies filled, problems discussed, technical challenges thrown down and projects scoped out during the most important meeting of the laser community in the UK this year. With the prospect of Brexit and the uncertainty of the future of international research projects, this year, more than ever, the need to build and maintain a wide network of relationships is paramount. Seize the opportunity and register for ILAS today!
