Halcon 17.12 MVTec Software has released the newest 17.12 version of its standard Halcon software, which offers an extensive set of deep learning functions and self-learning algorithms, such as those for training convolutional neural networks (CNNs) using sample application pictures. With the deep learning functionality, image data can now be classified easily and precisely. Users can therefore dramatically reduce programming requirements, do not need in-depth machine vision expertise, and can save both time and money. The new version is able to detect defects on reflective object surfaces via deflectometry, projecting several light patterns onto the surface of an object via a screen to identify errors. This is particularly interesting for applications in car manufacturing and the electronics industry. Another highlight is the improved automatic text


reader, which has become even better at detecting and reading overlapping letters and numbers that touch each other. The 17.12 release also offers a new method to fuse the data from different 3D point clouds into one unified model, which simplifies the post-processing of such point clouds through a much more accurate reconstruction of objects.
