This time last month, as I was writing my editor’s letter I was surprised to hear the announcement that there was to be another election, especially after all the assurances we were given that this would not happen. I very much agreed with Brenda from Bristol whose reaction on hearing the news was, ”Not Another One!” So ever since then, those who were in government have been on the election trail, instead
of addressing the pressing problems facing this country such as funding the NHS and social welfare and the housing shortage, not to mention the huge challenge of Brexit. Whatever one’s opinion on the UK leaving the European Union, it has led to an extended
period of uncertainty for many businesses throughout the country and another general election has added to these unsettling times. As the editor of the magazine I receive information about all aspects of the construction and
housing markets. Today, for instance, the Federation of Master Builders reacted favourably to the Green Party’s vision to insulate nine million existing homes. This would provide a significant economic stimulus, create thousands of jobs and increase the energy efficiency of much of our existing housing stock. Great for the environment and those struggling to pay ever increasing fuel bills. Earlier in the month the FMB called on all parties to include positive policies on immigration, skills and apprenticeships in
their manifestos, with particular reference to the construction sector. If these areas are not given careful consideration, any pledges on housing and infrastructure will be redundant. By the time you read this, Election Day will be looming, and then we wait and see if the new government delivers on its
promises, and steers us safely through Brexit to give this country the strong economy that is so vital for our future. At the end of last month, Peter Brett and I visited Troy Means Business at Silverstone – always a good show, followed by a
fun evening of entertainment. You can read about the day, find out who won the awards and read some exhibitors’ comments starting on page 16. In his report, Peter has included a very interesting conversation with Richard Pymm, the Business Development Director at Troy, about the key elements for business success and the challenges being faced in these uncertain times. More recently, Peter and I travelled up to Norfolk to visit Centurion Safety Products and spent a fascinating day learning
about their new branding, and the safety headgear they manufacture. You can read Peter’s report on this excellent company on page 12. That visit ties in well with other articles on health and safety in this edition. Alex Ingham from MI supplies has contributed a
piece about adequate safety workwear and equipment for the Voice of the Industry feature, and Wiha are focusing on health and ergonomic design for their 2017 health offensive. Peter has contributed a piece, about health and safety in general for the tradesman, following on from his ‘Dangers Of Dust’ article in the May edition. Peter has also written a review this month on the Mirka DEROS Sander and Abranet Ace Abrasives. Readers on our mailing list should always receive the current magazine during the first week of the month (a little later for
the July/August edition), but the online edition of the magazine goes on the website earlier, on the last day of the previous month. If you visit
www.toolbusiness.co.uk, you will see the current edition on the right hand side of the home page. Click on this and it will take you to the online edition. This has the facility to access all the email and website addresses for a quick and simple way to find out more about the companies that feature in the magazine. On the website there is also an archive page to see previous editions, and on other pages, news of products also have live
links to find out more information. All the reviews can be read online including those from previous editions, and there is a WhyBuy page where you can read a shorter snappier version of each review – ideal for the consumer to help with those all- important buying decisions. If you do not receive a printed magazine and would like one, do let Linda, the assistant editor know and she will add you to
the mailing list. contents
