Prize presented for DEWALT to Tim Simmonds by Julian Jenkins, from Sponsor Santander

Special prize of a bottle of champagne for Chicago Brand presented to Nick Gregson by Julian Jenkins, from Sponsor Santander

Some Exhibitors There were noticeably more exhibitors this year, and they covered a wider

range of categories than ever – perhaps showing that there is still room for experts and specialists as well as generalists in the market – provided you are good at what you do. Fastenings and fixings have a much higher profile nowadays, as their innovation

rate has soared. Trades now need to know that while a generalist fixing is okay in some applications, decking, outdoors, plasterboard etc, are often best served by choosing specialist screws or fixings. A headache for retailers maybe, in covering the range of options, but a chat to ForgeFix or Optimaxx was clearly a good option for expert advice. Power tools are always much in evidence at shows, since they are a staple

requirement of most trades. As ever, the competition for the highest Amp Hour battery packs and the quickest and smartest chargers seems to take the front of stage as manufacturers exploit the growing market for cordless tools. Kevin Rowles of Metabo told me that the company, with its comprehensive

range of cordless tools, is going to focus largely on the cordless worksite, and its exhibition stands will reflect that. Clearly cordless technology still has further to go, and the cut and thrust between the main players is not going to let up any time soon. Hitachi favoured a more minimal display, but is also proud of its battery and

charging technology and is bringing some fabulous tools to the market – like the cordless brad nailer that has taken off quite spectacularly. Draper Tools has focused on its Storm Force Range of cordless tools too, and

these are proving popular in the wider market. Members, suppliers and Troy all agreed that the 2017 Troy Means Business

Show was the ‘best ever’. But they said that last year, proving that the Troy Team always seems to manage to keep its eye on the ball to move onwards and upwards. So roll on 2018!
