the helmet with built-in safety glasses that could be simply flipped out of the way when not needed. The design allowed the user to wear their own glasses (sadly, now me, most of the time I am afraid) so that reading a plan or looking through a theodolite didn’t involve taking off a separate set of safety glasses each time. Other designs included built-in ear defenders – very much still protection above the neck – and already the discussions are going on about how radio and Bluetooth could be utilised to enhance communication on site via these ear defenders. Being a regular user of PPE gear like dust masks, ear defenders, safety glasses


and visors, it is obvious to me that clear thinking and ambitious design are vital for ensuring that safety on worksites continues to improve. It is also clear that the new team at Centurion have taken up the challenge to drive forward with a range of new ideas and products that will not only build on the previous 138 years, but push the boundaries of excellence in safety gear by using its collective “above the neck” abilities.
