letter from the publisher F

or a couple of months, I had planned the Transformative Travel feature article (pp 20-23) for the October edition.

Little did I know that many of us, Floridians, would have our very own unexpected, transformative journey in September. When Irma came whirling in, I was one who also evacuated with computer in car…only to fi nd myself without power in North Carolina. Irma

came to the mountains, too! As I write this letter, only two weeks have passed since Irma, and many of us still feel the affect. Fortunately, from storms like Harvey, Irma and Maria, the good news is that these events bring us closer together as a community. My favorite article Creating Community (pp 18-19) offers 15 valuable tips for bringing us together in a fun way. We are all friends! Thus, my choice for the cover art by Madeleine Tuttle (p10). Yes, we are all connected! That includes animals, too. It

doesn’t take a rocket-scientist to fi gure it out. When you eat animal products, ask: “Are you exploiting yourself?” Do you believe “You are what you eat?” If so, I must share my like- minded belief and text from Dr. Will Tuttle’s recent essay: When we eat animal products, they are often “the embodiment of misery, fear, despair, insomnia, frustration, and chronic pain. The pharmaceutical industry’s most immense profi ts come from people buying drugs for precisely these conditions: despair, trauma, insomnia, depression, and chronic pain.” His full essay is on pages 26-28. I hope you share it with

your friends! On a personal note: I watched the entertaining movie Leap Year (Netfl ix). There is a scene where actress Amy Adams and her partner had to prepare a home-cooked dinner while staying at a B&B in Ireland. Her new male/ chef friend went into the backyard, chose a hen and quickly broke her neck for their stew. Surprised, Amy cringed after viewing his killing. He replied to her: “Where do you think chickens come from?” She paused…. and then sheepishly answered: “the freezer section….?” So true, many Cosmopolitan Americans have forgotten—or

choose to forget—where their food comes from. Not good— especially for you, your family and the whole planet. My Prayer: Get out of the freezer section! Open your mind (and mouth) to all fresh, plant-based options! Here is a great way to learn more about living happily with a plant-based diet: On Saturday, October 28, attend the annual Central Florida VegFest (www.cfvegfest.org). It’s family-friendly and open to all! See details on page 15. See you there! Finally, I also believe: “You are what you think.”
