n honor of my father’s recent passing, I chose to reprint
our Sacred Passage article (Feb 2017). See pg 26. “Like birth, death is a transition we can wisely prepare for: In recent years, compassionate individuals and grassroots movements have emerged to help us conduct ourselves, heal and grow from losing a loved one or facing our own passing.” Many of our advertisers

Margaret and Rod Jones on Mt Dora Canal Tour
and readers have met Rod Jones. Both he and my mother (Mary Voell Jones) were instrumental in bringing Natural Awakenings to Central FL (18 yrs ago/ July 2000). I could not have done this without their ongoing moral support. Since Rod’s passing (6/29/18), my mother is experiencing Broken Heart
Syndrome. BHS is a real health condition which can mimic a heart attack. When researching BHS, I found that many cultures validate its existence. In Japan, it is referred to as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy. Te good news: BHS is reversible! Broken Heart Syndrome now makes perfect sense to me, especially since
my parents were married 60+ yrs. Rod’s Advanced Parkinsons limited and then prevented his speech. Communicating during their last two years was based on total love and “being in sync” which they had been for so long.
Finally, let’s focus on Reversible Conditions and Good News! Can having less and doing less help create more happiness? Tis month’s
feature story “Simplified Parenting” by Deborah Shouse makes a good case for it as a cure to today’s overstimulated and overscheduled families. Creating rituals and de-cluttering every facet of life, too, can bring more peace and balance to the household (p 18). Te interview with explorer and author Erling Kagge explains our deep
need for silence. He observes that external places of silence have become nearly extinct, but that we don’t have to go as far as we think to find it. Discover how silence is essential to our sanity and happiness (p 30). Cultivating the inner silence and well-being that sages have taught
through the centuries usually requires a commitment to designing our lives in ways that support that desire. Recently, I’ve discovered new tools along the way to nurture my internal well-being. Some days I do better than others, but when I silently tap into my wise inner witness, my life is much more in the flow. You’ll find plenty of resources in this month’s issue of Natural Awakenings
to help keep you in the flow. B-r-e-a-t-h-e,
