Northamptonshire make 90th birthday special during lockdown

It’s been a difficult time for anyone celebrating a birthday during lockdown but imagine having to isolate alone because of your age, the very thing you should be celebrating. Many Age UK Northamptonshire clients are socially isolated all year round but there’s no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has added to the intensity of the negative impact of isolation. As a people-centred charity, with the majority of services delivered

face-to-face, coronavirus put a halt on many of the services and inter- actions that older people in Northamptonshire would normally rely on. One of the services that Age UK Northamptonshire quickly put in place to support older people during the pandemic is an emergency hot food, grocery and medication delivery service. Amy Shelton, Age UK Northamptonshire’s Collaborative Care Coordinator, is one of a large team of front-line staff who have been travelling the county to deliver the emergency items and ensure older people are supported. Amy visited Age UK Northamptonshire client, Audrey, at her home

in Northampton to regularly deliver groceries during lockdown. It was during a socially distanced conversation that Amy discovered it was due to be Audrey’s 90th birthday on 2nd May and she would have no one to celebrate with her as her family live in another area of the country. “During my shopping delivery visits I found out that Audrey had a

big birthday coming up and it was heartbreaking to think of her cele- brating on her own. I also discovered Audrey’s love of cheese rather than chocolate, so my colleague Sham and I thought it would be a lovely idea to take round a little birthday gift to help lift her spirits.” Audrey has a visual impairment and had been unable to access

large print books due to the temporary closure of her local library. As an avid reader, this added to her loneliness and so Amy made sure

she sourced large print books to take round for Audrey’s birthday. “I was only too happy to take the time to visit

Audrey on her special day. I took round a card, cheese and biscuits instead of a cake and the books. Audrey was overjoyed and very touched by the visit. We were thrilled to bring a lift to her day,” says Amy. Going above and beyond is part of the Age UK

Northamptonshire ethos. The charity works hard all year round to keep older people safe and inde- pendent and ensure that no one feels forgotten. As a locally registered and funded charity, Age UK Northamptonshire rely on the support of the commu- nity to ensure they can deliver much-needed services to older people. If you would like to support their efforts, you

can get involved through volunteering, fundraising, choosing them as your charity of the year, donating equipment or raffle prizes, following, liking and sharing their content on social media or by making a donation to their Coronavirus Emergency Appeal:
