ELECTRIC DREAMS
There is a revolution happening in Britain and it’s electric. There are around 200,000 cars on the roads that are powered by batteries and, thanks to a combination of politi- cal will and environmentally savvy consumers, this number is expected to rise. Investors are on board, backing the green bonds issued by carmakers to develop their electric range. The question is: what should pension schemes be investing in to get the country ready for the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in nine years’ time?
A huge investment is needed to build the charging point network, to make electric vehicles cheaper and to extend the life of their batteries. We assess this in more detail from page 26.
This issue also looks at smart beta strategies, which have been marketed as an alterna- tive to traditional active and passive approaches. Targeting specific types of assets might protect you from volatility or drive returns over the long term but, as we find out from page 40, there are pitfalls to consider. Then we examine multi asset. Such strategies proved a popular option for investors fol- lowing the financial crisis. Yet, outcomes for investors have varied in the past decade, meaning that there is much to assess before following such strategies. Find out what from page 44. Finally, we speak to the chief investment officer of Border to Coast who discusses, among other things, what will be big in China in the next decade, the art of change management, building trust with partner funds and why ESG data gives him a head- ache. Read what Daniel Booth has to say from page 12.
