FOCUS COVID-19 response Case studies – UK and Brazil
United Kingdom
Crisis WHILE WORKING just outside a company site, a contractor was electrocuted and sustained life changing burn injuries. An ambulance attended almost immediately, during a power outage at the business in question and a number of others, as well as most of the surrounding town. With the fire and rescue service, police and power networks at the scene, an attempt to restore the electricity supply caused a small fire. A nearby gas main supply had to be taken into consideration, leading to evacuation of the whole site. The crisis team took up incident management off site at a nearby hotel, as pre planned for emergencies.
Impact The business assessed the implications of the accidents based on criteria such as impact on employees; site or multiple sites; business operation; fatality or life changing injury; and finances. Once the injured contractor had received immediate medical care, the team moved on to assess other factors. Cutting the mains area grid power line meant there was no electricity on site, although originally the crisis management team was allowed to stay on site, while other staff were asked to work from home. The evacuation order required the team to move.
Crisisboardroom The company had two Crisisboardroom kits, one of which was stored off site in the event that any emergency put its business out of use. Once they arrived at the hotel, pre arranged for any off site incident management, the kit was used to set out priorities, what was needed for site recovery and how to align business recovery. It was also used for understanding issues
related to customer impact, shipping, vendor management, staff management and ongoing injured party updates. Using the high visibility jackets supplied reinforced the message that this was not normal business. Roles were easily identified and people understood their key responsibilities. Additionally, the team was helped to
establish priorities when the site was down and later when staff were allowed back in, to ensure everything was still working. Despite having to move locations in the middle of the incident, everyone was helped to refocus and ensure structured responses to the next stages.
Outcome Storing one kit at the off site location six months earlier proved to be a good move. Crisisboardroom provided a structured approach, but the company had practised using it in simulations to obtain the full benefit.
