Foreword W
EditorWilliam Roszczykintroduces this month’s edition
ELCOME TO the March 2019 issue of F&RM, which focuses on suppression, namely sprinklers and watermist, and smoke ventilation.
I don’t want to preach to the converted, but it’s immensely
clear to me personally in my time since I joined the FPA that sprinklers and water suppression systems are a tried, tested and trusted technology that ought to see more use. With the continued development of watermist too, this area is growing, and the adoption of systems as well – especially as the fi re and rescue services regularly stress that they endorse their use and advocate for such systems’ assistance in tackling fires.

Want to write for us?
Articles can cover aspects related to fire, business and resilience planning, protection of lives and buildings, or insurance.
Our minimum word count is 1,500 words – we also require a two to three sentence author bio and print quality author headshot, for our contributors’ page, and high resolution images to support your piece. We do not run overt advertorial – the best way to proceed is to explain general principles or technologies in the context of fire and other risks, with mention of relevant products in a case study.
If you’d like to write for F&RM, please contact us at

On sprinklers and watermist, the Business Sprinkler Association’s Tom Roche reflects on Approved Document B as it currently exists, and examines proposals and mooted changes that may arise with the news that it will see a technical review. In turn, Johnson Controls’ Henrik Johansson, Steve Sims and Arjan ten Broeke review developments in both technology and the market to see what the future might hold for fi re suppression systems. Another valuable resource – and less noticed, but more
integral to many types of buildings – is smoke ventilation, with such systems key to a given building’s ability to assist firefighters and keep safe those trying to evacuate from the dangers of smoke inhalation. John Newton of Advanced notes that, as controlling
smoke and airflow is essential during a fire event, it is worth examining the functions and features of such systems, alongside all important compliance matters and relevant standards. Meanwhile, Simon Plummer from FläktGroup discusses why and how changes to building regulations would simplify and improve the auditing process for high rise smoke extraction system designs. Finally, we have three current affairs features on very different
topics. First, FireAngel’s Nick Rutter explores connected safety solutions and how they are transforming interactive and predictive fire safety, before Arup’s Danielle Antonellis covers fi re safety for marginalised communities, stating that to reduce deaths, injuries and losses from fi re, investment is needed in fi re safety. The fi nal current affairs piece sees James Beale of Invicta
Group asking what have we learned from past disasters, and he highlights three such major fi res that continue to inform our approach to fi re safety. We have seen a great deal of interest in this year’s editorial
programme, so if you’d like to write for us please get in touch before every issue is full! Our April issue will focus on protection systems and will
include articles on passive protection, portable protection and remote protection. If you’d like to contribute an article to that issue or a future edition, please get in touch with me at
