Sprinklers/watermist

FRSs have expressed the opinion that sprinklers are needed in more buildings, because they make their job safer, easier and cost effective, and the nation will also benefit if more are fitted because sprinklers save lives, save businesses, save jobs and protect the environment. The evidence demonstrates that sprinkler

systems have an operational reliability of 94%, and that in those cases they extinguish or contain the fire on 99% of occasions across a wide range of building types2

UK, automatic fire sprinklers are not widely used because the guidance rarely prescribes their use. Broadening the focus of the fire safety Building Regulations to include property protection will result in more buildings being designed to be resilient to disproportionate damage, through the use of combinations of passive and active fire safety measures. The BSA believes that sprinkler systems

would be a major part of this change, and also that sprinklers should be more readily considered as a viable option right across the built environment – whether it be a hospital, school, retail or leisure facility or commercial and industrial building. Providing better protection for all types of buildings will minimise costs to the affected businesses and the general economy. It is in

the interest of the nation to thoroughly review fire safety legislation, which is why the industry should encourage a more forward looking technical review that will make buildings safe and sustainable well into the future
