HIGH-RESOLUTION CMOS X-RAY DETECTOR

Non-destructive testing (NDT) event gains insight into high-resolution industrial X-Ray detector

X-Ray detection specialists from Teledyne Technologies have been demonstrating the company’s latest CMOS Shad-o-Box 2K HS industrial x-ray detector at the Non- destructive Testing Management Association (NDTMA) annual conference. With an exceptionally high-resolution of

49.5µm pixel size and fast frame rate of up to 10fps, the detector is ideal for non- destructive industrial x-ray applications including pipeline and weld inspections. Because of its narrow enclosure and built-in GigE (Gigabit Ethernet) interface, the Shad- o-Box 2K HS is also optimised for pipeline crawler use. The Shad-o-Box 2K HS complements

Teledyne’s family of high-resolution CMOS- based x-ray detectors and their applications.

Together with Teledyne’s rugged portable GO-SCAN XR detector and the new large area Rad-icon 2329 panel, these 49.5µm pixel detectors are the ideal for a growing number of challenging NDT weld inspection problems. By reaching a resolution of D13 with high contrast sensitivity, these detectors are perfectly suitable for applications ranging from 2-25mm in material thickness according to ISO 17636-2 class B.

“In a recent welded aluminium inspection exercise to identify non- uniformities in wall

thickness for a customer in the aerospace industry,

Teledyne’s CMOS x-ray detector was able to identify both the .18 AL IQI and .25 AL IQI’s to a sensitivity of 2-1T without

difficulty,” commented systems specialist, John Cope. “In my 46 years in the business of non-

destructive testing, this is one of the more challenging digital radiography applications I’ve conducted. Teledyne’s CMOS detector was revealed to be the best instrument for this demanding application over the other available technologies,” he adds. At the event, Teledyne also revealed its

CP200D, the lightest 200kV portable x-ray generator on the market, as well as the CP160B, a compact 160kV battery operated portable x-ray source with small focal spot.

CORROSION RESISTANT VALVES STAND UP TO HARSHNESS OF MARINE APPLICATIONS

Valves with high levels of corrosion resistance are available for use in reverse osmosis desalination plants

The challenges associated with process systems operating in highly corrosive marine and salt water environments often involve control valves, which must be designed to be highly resistant to corrosion. A good example of this is on reverse osmosis plants and salt water desalination plants in marine applications, which is where Badger Meter valves have proven to be very effective. Osmosis occurs when a dilute solution

passes from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration through an osmotic membrane and reverse osmosis is the opposite of this. Reverse osmosis plants

❱❱ Desalination plant valves require components made to withstand the effects of highly corrosive salt water

water to cross the membrane while holding the salt back. The pressures required to desalinate seawater are in the range of 50-60 Bar and must be controlled accurately to ensure the membranes are protected from damage. Salt water is extremely corrosive and high

work on the principle of creating a differential pressure across a semi- permeable membrane. Pressure is applied to the salt water on

one side of the membrane until it exceeds the osmotic pressure which causes fresh

pressure components should be manufactured in high quality corrosion resistant materials. The Badger Meter RC250 barstock control valve is suited for these types of applications. Machined from 316L, 904L or duplex stainless steel, the valve provides a high level of corrosion resistance combined with accurate pressure control. For reverse osmosis applications, the valves are supplied with 240v, 110v, or 24v DC electric actuators which are suitable for a seawater environment with position feedback and three-point control. They are designed to handle system

pressures of up to 340 Bar and will withstand temperatures of -70ºC up to 530ºC.
