During the last four decades, standards expert David Richards has had active involvement in environmental test standardisation and worked on every issue of the UK Defence Standard 00-035 related to environmental testing. He has also worked on environmental standards for NATO, chaired the European Expert Group recommending environmental requirements for the European Defence Agency and worked on European (CEN) standards.

This report includes the update to the standard used for automotive electrical and electronic equipment to establish environmental conditions and appropriate tests. It also includes an update to a standard for testing secondary lithium-ion cells for electric vehicles. The evaluation of the reaction of various lithium batteries against abnormal environmental conditions and abuse is becoming more of an issue as they are used in a greater range of applications. Several test
houses have specialist facilities to test such batteries. The report also has new magnetic testing of space systems, sub-systems and units. Although this has specialist application, there are procedures not commonly found in other environmental standards. There’s also a new standard related to information for remote diagnostic support of road vehicles. It has general requirements and constraints as well as use cases and applicable scenarios.
