London-Edinburgh franchise, it instigated the procurement of Hitachi Azumas, a new breed of hybrid train that can run on overhead electric power where available, while switching to diesel when necessary – an entirely cleaner approach than the one existing on the West Coast.

A NEW APPROACH Bi-modal trains aren’t new in themselves. Electro- diesels have been used in the south of England for decades, alternating between third-rail electric power pickup when available and diesel on those routes where it isn’t. However, the Azuma is the first to use the

i-modal or hybrid trains are seen as one answer to reducing emissions on a network that is finding 100 per cent electrification too costly to be effective. Some routes, including the West Coast Main Line from

London to Glasgow, use a combination of modes of power depending on the section being travelled on. Virgin, which holds the franchise for the main

London-Glasgow services, runs both electric Pendolinos and diesel Voyagers on much the same routes, with the Voyager running when the route variations take excursions into non-electrified sections.

West, the Azuma has now been introduced onto the newly formed LNER network between London and Edinburgh, the first new stock on that part the network for three decades and part of “Branson’s Legacy”.

EMISSION CONTROL Being hybrid doesn’t necessarily mean clean power. While it is clean in electric mode, there is still the potential for high levels of emissions when running on diesel so Hitachi has been working with UK exhaust and emissions control specialist, Eminox, on reducing emissions on the Azuma. As a result, the company created and

manufactured specially designed exhausts and insulated pipework for LNER’s entire 65-locomotive fleet of UK assembled, bullet train inspired Azumas. The challenge was to develop a bespoke exhaust

system to transfer gas from the after treatment system located under the floor next to the engine, through the car body to the rear and ensure safe discharge from the top of the train. Space was tight and so routing the 16m of 140-200mm diameter stainless steel pipework was complex. The design incorporated insulated pipes, convolutes, bellows and mounting brackets. The Azuma is part of the Hitachi AT300 family

and is a class 800 bi-mode multiple unit. Eminox has been working with Hitachi on the AT300 family since 2014 and has supplied more than 550 systems, many of which are already in service on trains operated by Great Western Railway and TransPennine Express. “After working closely with Hitachi for five years
