The committee does deal with a number of ethical dilemmas

from members. We received a query from a clinician involved in the national training for CAMHS eating disorders about the fact that in a number of eating-disorders-services family therapists are being “trained” to take blood pressures (with machines) and temperatures as part of their clinical work with clients. This was raised in terms of certain sections of our code of ethics and practice in relation to competence to practice, dual roles and appropriate indemnity arrangements for practitioners. At an ethics meeting, we discussed the expectation on the

family therapist in an NHS setting to undertake clinical intervention; for example, blood pressure monitoring and weighing patients with eating disorders and if this was covered by our code of ethics. We reviewed the code and agreed that section 20 of the Code of Ethics only applies to the therapist’s competence in relation to their systemic training and practice, so does not apply to therapists in CAMHS eating disorders services carrying out procedures such as taking blood pressure or weighing clients. However, in our discussion, we recognised it is likely that NHS trusts will be asking non-medically trained staff to do these tasks and we were concerned that individual clinicians are properly trained and protected by appropriate insurance. In respect of taking blood pressure, there remains the issue of interpreting the results and who holds medical responsibility if this is carried out by a non- medically trained clinician and how this is covered in the relevant protocols of the individual NHS trusts. As far as the off er of training

goes, how is this regulated; is it part of the individual clinicians regular mandatory training in an eating disorders systemic/family therapists post and is this recognised and covered by a) the trust’s insurance or b) the individual’s own insurance if they have a policy? In summary, it was agreed that each individual will have to

make their own decision, but a trust may need to consider the ethical implications of imposing this on family therapists. This is not about someone’s competence to be a family therapist; it is a wider issue facing those working in various settings. The ethical dilemma being whether this may compromise the competence of the family therapist to deliver systemic psychotherapy to the client in this context. The best interests of the client should always be borne in mind. We do hope members will be interested to join the ethics

committee. We are currently a small group and would welcome new members. There is a requirement that you are or have been UKCP registered as a family and systemic psychotherapist. We are particularly looking for someone who is a student on a supervision training course, and interested in ethics, to join us and support us with our thinking. If you are interested please contact me on annihilton@hotmail.com

With best wishes Anni Hilton, chair, on behalf of the ethics committee members – Barbara Warner, Chris Burroughes, Nigel Jacobs, Angus Crutchfi eld, Gillian Stewart Mc-Kay, Cherrith Marshall and Heather Qualtrough.
