New opportunities to get active

A new scheme combines an app with smart technology and local activators to encourage more people to engage with their outdoor gym and open spaces.

THE new initiative from Great Outdoor Gym Company (TGO) aims to ‘activate’ the UK’s outdoor gyms, parks and open spaces. The company is looking for partners to train

local people who regularly use their local park and outdoor gym as activators to help inspire others to do the same. The training is designed to give local people a pathway to employment while helping to encourage better use of parks and green spaces. In addition, the company has launched the

Activate app, which helps people to locate one of the hundreds of outdoor gyms across the UK. Once at the outdoor gym, users can log and track their workout and share the information with friends. Smart gym technology in TGO’s new outdoor

gyms measures usage of the equipment and provides empirical data for local authorities helping to make the case for retaining and protecting their parks and open spaces. TGO plans to activate parks each week with

an inclusive workout called The Big Community Workout. Free and family friendly, the session offers an inclusive full body workout and even includes litter picking to clean up the park. “This is a sustainable model that gives back

to councils and demonstrates the value and increased usage of the nation’s parks without putting further strain on resources,” says

Georgie Delaney, managing director of TGO. Meanwhile, the company has also teamed

up with London Sport to encourage more Londoners to get active in the great outdoors. The two organisations will support local

authorities to develop new outdoor gyms in the capital’s parks and outdoor spaces. “We are really excited to work with The Great

Outdoor Gym Company as part of our efforts to help more Londoners to live and benefit from active lives. As the nation’s most populous city, London faces particular challenges around the availability and use of space for play and activity,” said Matt Roebuck, London Sport relationship manager at London Sport. “This partnership will help us to explore

innovative ways to make new use of outdoor spaces, and hopefully contribute to a long- term increase in physical activity levels across the capital.” TGO has installed more than 1,100 outdoor

gyms to date. The equipment, which is constructed from recycled materials, has supported communities across the UK to be more physically active, with activity on sites also generating energy that charges phones, lights and even buildings. “We have been working in and around

London for 10 years, and our outdoor gyms are an affordable and sustainable way to enable communities to better manage and improve

their health and wellness,” said Dean Hill, head of active cities at TGO. “This exciting partnership with London

Sport, who shares our belief in the power of innovation and collaboration to achieve increased levels of activity, will help to step up activation opportunities around new and existing spaces as we work together to make London the most active city in the world.”
