Good gym flooring, like any other well-designed product, must look good as well as perform, as these projects demonstrate.
Sports centre calls time on that sinking feeling
WHEN the floor beneath the feet of its students and members began to crumble, quite literally, the University of Kent’s sports centre called in the TVS Group to help put them back on firmer ground. After years of pounding from heavy weights,
parts of the concrete sub-base at the University’s Canterbury Sports Centre was no longer taking the strain. The concrete had been repaired several times but needed replacing and other surface flooring materials were also looking worse for wear and were no longer fit for purpose. After substantially strengthening the sub-
base in the free weights area and raising it to the required height, TVS specified, supplied and installed its 40mm SPORTEC Style interlocking tiles on top. The rubber tiles provide long term protection to the concrete sub-base as well as a safe and stable training surface for those performing heavy lifting. In the wellness area, a shock-absorbing,
dual- layered flooring system was installed, along with a custom-produced EPDM sprint track. The new flooring for the fitness suite is made from recycled rubber, provides good cushioning underfoot and can reduce the high impact forces generated, for example, during plyometric training. The elastic layered sprint track enables both coach and athlete to perform speed resistance drills while a physiotherapist can also utilise the area when rehabilitating injured athletes.

Affordable flooring solves acoustics issues
KOBOX is London’s premium ‘Fight Club meets Nightclub’ training experience. The concept is based on 50 minute classes which employ a range of functional kit including punchbags, free weights, medicine balls and various combinations of six-punch styles to deliver a high intensity cardio and strength training workout. KOBOX needed to find an affordable
flooring solution which solved an acoustics issue. “The nature of the sessions means the
flooring needs to be able to absorb a high level of noise and impact in order for KOBOX to co-locate in harmony with other businesses”, says Paul Farrell, national accounts manager at Physical Company. “When KOBOX launched its second site in
London Wall, the owners were keen to install a flooring solution which would not only withstand impact and reduce injury risk for users but would also absorb shock and noise associated with the slamming of medicine balls and dropping of free weights.” Physical Company performed a series of
acoustic tests at site. Based on the results, it was recommended that the studio space be kitted out with 20mm Shockpad flooring, complemented by an Everlast 8mm top layer. “We chose the Shockpad and Everlast
combination because this provided excellent shock absorbency and impact protection at an affordable price. On our recommendation, KOBOX installed Everlast in roll format, rather than tiles, to create a surface with as few joins as possible. The basic Black rubber also ensured the flooring complemented the rest of the graphics, creating a wrap-around, visual experience.” As a result of the success of the installation,
the same flooring solution has been applied at the third KOBOX venue in Marylebone which opened at the end of 2018.
